After some challenging weather conditions in the first weeks of their row and a power failure to some of the systems on board their boat that required getting external help while being docked at Bridport, the Sea Change Row team is on the move again. The crew, including our Technical Managing Consultant Jess Mc Iver, is currently approaching Land's End and has been rowing alongside dolphins! They aim to round the point on Tuesday and head into the Irish Sea. As their journey around Great Britain continues, we'll cheer on the inspirational Sea Change Row crew. Be sure to follow their progress on their social media profiles and via their website's live tracker: https://lnkd.in/eUx2zv-G #SeaChange #SeaChangeERM #Rowing

The power sector faces competing sustainability challenges as it drives the low-carbon energy transition. While ambitious targets for new renewable power generation and associated grid infrastructure need to be met, global biodiversity loss is also increasing the need to halt and reverse impacts on nature. That’s why we’re supporting clients like Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks Transmission (SSEN Transmission ) in balancing these two global imperatives.ERM is conducting biodiversity baseline surveys for SSEN Transmission through a combination of remote sensing and experienced survey teams.Using this data, we are developing mitigation plans to avoid, minimise, restore, and offset biodiversity impacts, helping SSEN Transmission achieve its target of 10% biodiversity net gain for all new energy infrastructure projects.More on our nature solutions here: https://lnkd.in/dCTghYSr#Sustainability #Nature #Biodiversity

UK mining is set for strong growth thanks in particular to the need for critical minerals supply that is secure and sustainable. As these projects approach financing decisions, now is the time to build in sustainability so that investments are environmentally, socially and financially sound.Adam Chase, ERM’s Partner Lead for Sustainable Energy Solutions, showed that mining projects can work symbiotically with the industries and communities that surround them, creating additional value for all. Adam gave the example of heat, a byproduct of some mining activities but a potentially valuable input for nearby housing and industry. Mining developments in regions such as Cornwall should be planned with a symbiotic approach from the start. These were the main points of Adam’s headline presentation at the UK Mining Conference in Cornwall, also reported in the Mining Journal.#CriticalMinerals #Mining #UKMiningConference

Karen Aitchison, Global Head of Mental Health and Wellbeing at ERM, explains what PRIDE is all about - for her, for the LGBTQ+ community, and for ERM in the shape of this year’s campaign. ”For me, “Supporting without Exceptions“ is transcending performative allyship. While PRIDE is often associated with fun, flags, and festivals, genuine allyship involves self-reflection, a commitment to learning and listening, and, most importantly, the courage to intervene.”By striving for this, I believe we can create more psychologically safe workplaces for the LGBTQ+ community.” #Pride #Pride2024Karen A.

Today, we're celebrating #SeaTurtleDay and Emmy - a sea turtle living in Costa Rica.Emmy had just nested when the Sea Turtles Forever (STF) anti-poaching patrollers found her during their nightly nest protection search. Missions like this have allowed them to save 8,000 - 12,000 endangered sea turtle eggs yearly for the past 15 years. The turtle was named after our colleague Emmy Zartman, which is a tribute to her and the ERM Foundation's support.Sea Turtles Forever works to raise conservation awareness, sustain habitat, and reduce the poaching of threatened and endangered sea turtle eggs in Pacific Costa Rica. They also fight to reduce microplastic in beaches that threaten sea turtles and other marine life by conducting beach filtration and community education. The ERM Foundation is proud to have supported STF for several years through grant funding and pro bono support. Recent pro bono support has enabled Sea Turtles Forever to improve data collection and data storage and focus on complicated applications for creating wildlife-protected areas necessary for their vitally important work. We have also utilized our technical data management and analysis skills to enable Sea Turtles Forever to compile annual reports, undertake a full life of the project report for the last 20 years and produce reports in Spanish. The ERM Foundation also has been funding the STF educational program in Costa Rica - an environmental class for 7 schools in the sea turtle nesting area. “Why Sea Turtles are Important” teaches the youth how important a cornerstone species is to the entire marine ecology of the region—trying to change a culturally embedded practice of illegally harvesting eggs for sale on the black market or consumption, which takes a generation or more to change. Our colleagues Natalie Katsuda and Larissa Gleason are the organization's ERM Foundation sponsors and assist with grant writing, fundraising, and data analysis expertise."A big part of our pro bono hours are used to update data software systems, field data quality assurance, and control. The data is collected by local beach patrollers who protect sea turtle nests from poachers by their presence and relocating eggs so that poachers cannot locate them. They collect data on nest locations, clutch size, egg characteristics, and nest success. They also collect data on the turtles' morphology and health and record and tag turtles." Natalie and Larissa explain.Learn more about Sea Turtles Forever and other ERM Foundation projects here: https://lnkd.in/d9E8kzn#ERMFoundation #SeaTurtles #MarineWildlifePhoto credit: Sea Turtles Forever

Earlier in June, in collaboration with ABN AMRO Bank N.V., we organized the “Future of Non-Financial Reporting 2024” event in the Netherlands. During this event, we discussed insights on ESG (environmental, social, and governance) reportingand provided an overview of our operating environment.Key takeaways from various keynotes included the importance of keeping the end goal in mind: creating a real impact. While ESG reporting serves as a guide, it’s essential not to become blinded by it.ERM partners Joop Joost Hietbrink and Misha Elkerbout emphasized the need to overcome obstacles and make the right connections within and outside the company. Once you understand your tooling requirements, consider going digital.Another significant discussion centered around the evolving role of finance professionals in ESG reporting. They must deepen their knowledge of sustainability, incorporate strategic planning, and implement efficient data processes.Lastly, we delved into the concept of CSDDD (Corporate Social and Sustainable Due Diligence). Companies should not delay developing robust human rights and sustainability practices. High-quality policies and practices reduce adverse impacts more effectively. A systemic approach within the company is more effective than stand-alone policies.Guest speakers Nick Roosendaal (ABN AMRO), Michelle Westermann-Behaylo (University of Amsterdam), Akshaya Prabakar (TenneT), Annemaren Kingma (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) offered valuable insights and shared their experience of navigating sustainability disclosureReflecting on these insights, we consider the event a success and hope it marks the beginning of a trend where companies move beyond compliance and foster meaningful connections with all stakeholders.#ESG #SustainabilityReporting #CSDDD

Energy optimization is a recurring priority in complex industrial facilities, and industries are under increasing pressure to minimize emissions and deliver against compliance requirements.Andrew Wyld explored the topic while speaking to Gareth Lane, MBA, ERM’s EMEA Partner for Digital Products, at the ‘Microsoft Solution Showcase AI: Sustainability’ event earlier in June.Gareth explained how complex, carbon-intensive facilities can reduce energy and emissions withemissions.AI, discussed ERM’s partnership with Microsoft, and shared our clients' success stories about how they reduce their carbon emissions, achieve compliance, and save money by implementing emissions.AI in their operations.Watch the full interview here:https://lnkd.in/dgsq6BD2#EmissionsManagement #CorporateDecarbonization #EnergyReduction
