JEFF MOREHEAD NO-TOBACCO T-SHIRTS Members and friends make T-shirts advocating a smoke-free lifestyle as part of World NoTobacco Day during Tuesday's kickoff to the summer season for the Boys and Girls Club of Grant County, 3402 S. Meridian Club shifts to summer er mode Activities mark No-Tobacco Day BY MELISSA VOGT The parking lot of the Boys and Girls Club of Grant County was turned into a carnival Tuesday to begin the summer season.

Participants could toss water balloons or footballs, shoot hoops, play miniature golf, joust atop an inflatable field or even play Madden NFL and Guitar Hero video games. At each station, winners could earn prizes or tickets to enter a raffle for prizes like a portable DVD player, camera and iPod music player. A dunk booth, with volunteers and staff in the wet seat, was a popular activity. "I like when they go down in the water," said 9-yearold Jania James. She grinned after scoring a direct hit with her last throw.

"It's funny," chimed in Harris, 11. She's a regular at the club and plays basketball. Tuesday was also World No-Tobacco Day, SO the club wanted to raise awareness of the dangers of tobacco use, Program Director Jennalee Veenkant said. Upon arriving at 3402 S. Meridian kids were first directed to a station manned by Voice Group members.

The teen activists speak out against tobacco, Veenkant said. Kids tested their knowledge about tobacco and smoking with a true-orfalse quiz before being allowed to spray-paint a T- shirt with an anti-smoking message. The kickoff started at 3 p.m. and 75 children had participated as of 6 p.m., Mentoring 202 Co-director Jennifer Lopez said. The event was scheduled until 8 p.m.

The event also garnered 17 new memberships, Lopez said. An annual membership costs $10 and is open to children ages 6 to 18. Starting Monday, the Boys and Girls Club of Grant County will switch to summer hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

During the school year, the club is open from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Breakfast and lunch will be provided through the Kids partnership with St. Martin De Porres Community Center. While school is in session, Kids serves dinner at the club.

The basketball and mentoring programs continue through the summer, but there will also field trips and other activities not possible during the school year. Andrew Vandiver, 12, was excited about the opportunities coming up and plans to be at the club a lot over the summer. Crafts and summer reading program activities will be offered daily from 11 a.m. to noon and 2 to 3 p.m. Lopez said another day full of activities similar to Tuesday will be from noon to 4 p.m.

June 9. In honor of the club's 50th anniversary, the goal will be to sign up 50 new members, she said. Valley Acres floods still an issue Residents worry about drainage BY MELISSA VOGT The cul-de-sac where 32nd Street ends flooded again last week, prompting residents to worry their decades-long drainage woes weren't completely solved by work the county completed in late 2009. A half dozen residents from the Valley Acres neighborhood behind Valley View Plaza, 3240 S. Western went to Grant County commissioners Tuesday afternoon to ask the county to take another look at the problem.

Commissioner David Glickfield has asked the highway superintendent and surveyor to review it report back by June 14. Sandra Price said flooding has been an issue since she moved there in 1969. cul-de-sac floods whenever 2 to inches of rain falls within two days, she said. The problem seems to have worsened with more development along the Bypass. In late 2009, the Grant County Highway Department spent $16,860 to hook the area into the drainage network serving the Bypass.

Price said the recent county project improved the situation, because now any collected water drains quicker at least it did until last week. The cul-de-sac started to back up Wednesday morning, she told commissioners, and remained impassable from flooding until Saturday morning, when the water began to recede slightly, only to rise again after more rain fell. "Monday was the first time I could see pavement," Price said. "Up until we got complaints last week, I though this was a done deal," Bardsley said. The county doesn't have a stormwater drainage system like cities do, he said.

Ditches and privately built drains handle most stormwater runoff. Privately built drains can be funded through a special assessment of all properties in the watershed served by a proposed drain. Lunch Miller View Amish School shed around Valley Acres because it can connect the city system near Valley Avenue, even though the flooded area lies outside city limits. Grant County Drainage Board Vice Chairman Gordon Gough said he recalled at least two times when Valley Acres residents have come to the board seeking answers to why the subdivision floods so frequently.

"There's not a cheap solution to the problem," Gough said. Commissioners are responsible for maintenance of county roads, which is why they have been involved. In other business Tuesday, commissioners directed the highway department to review its plans to remove a viaduct near Mier and straighten an S-curve on County Road 165 North near 800 West. The county project affects the path of a proposed pedestrian trail that would connect the town of Converse with the Sweetser Switch Trail. Converse Town Council President Joe Lenon said time is running out to finalize the trail's path because a grant funding the trail expires this year.

Trail planners hope the straightened road could be 10 feet wider to accommodate pedestrian and bicycle traffic in a dedicated lane, Lenon said. WATERS AUCTION Saturday, May 4TH 2011 10:00 A.M.
